'Global Maritime Education and Training Support Center (GLOMET)' has been founded in order to establish maritime industry system and consistently develop required workforce for shipping industry in developing countries to advance.
In 1945, when Korean shipping was underdeveloped, Korea Maritime and Ocean University has been founded as a Korea's first national university. As it turned out excellent professional workforces, which became the main driving force for our nation's holding ships capacity to grow up to 5th largest in the world.
Shipping is Korea's economic lifeline, and has became one of the 5 industries among semiconductor, automobile, petrochemisty and shipbuilding industries. Shipping industry is responsible for 99.7% of korea peninsula's import and exports, establshing a close relationship with our daily life. Our economics could not possibly withstand without shipping, as trade dependency is over 70%.
Steady turn out of excellant professional workforces is compulsory to maintain and develop our important shipping industry, which is Korea Maritime and Ocean University's mission. However, there will be a scarcity of maritime wokers predicted by many studies. Developed shipping nations are distressed with lack of lecturers who train maritime workers, and nearby environment may not be friendly.
We, 'Global Maritime Education and Training Support Center', are in charge of resolving scarcity of maritime workforce as mentioned above, and to train workforce who can support our nation to become third in world's maritime nations by possessing 1 ton of ships by year 2020.
